Why Do We Celebrate Valentine's Day?

Valentine’s Day is believed to come from an old Roman festival called Lupercalia, which happened in the middle of February every year to start springtime.

It is believed that boys would draw the name of a girl from a box and that would declare them as boyfriend and girlfriend or even married during the yearly festival. As time went on, the church wanted to turn the festival into a Christian celebration and used St. Valentine’s name as a way to remember him.

Who is St Valentine? He was a famous Saint whom we don’t know much about, but it is believed he was a Roman Priest from the 13th century.

During the 13th Century, Ruler Emperor Claudius II believed that Roman men who married were not fit to be soldiers, so he banned marriage. Valentines saw this as very unfair and decided to protest by breaking the rules and arranging marriage in secret.

Emperor Claudius found out about the secret marriages and threw Valentine in jail. According to known Legends, Valentine fell in love with the jailer’s daughter. On his execution day, February 14th, he sent her a love letter signed “From your Valentine.”

Today, we all know Valentine’s Day, for many around the world, is a holiday that brings people together to express their love for one another with messages of love, flowers, pink and red hearts, and chocolates.
